Is a concept named by Dr Arline Geronimus to describe the long-term impact of experiencing discrimination. It refers to the degradation of a person’s psychological and physical capabilities, piece by piece. It has a massive impact that was ignored until recently.
Living and working in toxicity is bound to have a similar impact because it is toxic behaviours that are used to discriminate and be unfair.
Effects of weathering include negative effects on your cognitive skills (thinking, decision-making, attention) physical aspects such as sleep and emotions. You could also be more wary and be on the alert for the next time.
If you have experienced discrimination or toxicity, then stop and think about how you currently cope. What could be different if you had not experienced negative behaviours.
What more can you do to heal and counteract the effects of weathering? If you are still in an environment that is negative, can you leave or do you have to stay? In either case, think about how good your self-care is.
If you are a manager and experience different or difficult behaviours from someone with differences, then stop and ask if part of the reason is that they have had to cope with negativity. How could you help them?
